Sodium Phenylbutyrate is a nitrogen-scavenging active pharmaceutical ingredient used in the long-term management of urea cycle disorders (UCDs) — a group of inherited conditions in which the body cannot efficiently remove waste nitrogen, leading to dangerous build-up of ammonia in the blood.
In the body it is converted to phenylacetate, which combines with glutamine and is excreted by the kidneys, providing an alternative route for removing excess nitrogen. Beyond UCDs, it is also studied for its activity as a histone-deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor and chemical chaperone.
How it works
Metabolised to phenylacetate
Once administered, it is converted to phenylacetate, the active nitrogen-binding form.

Phenylacetate combines with glutamine to form phenylacetylglutamine.
Excreted renally
